Decarbonisation is the first and foremost challenge for present generations, specifically when considering the hard to abate sectors such as international shipping. Whereas the development of propulsion engines capable of running on renewable fuels can be expected to provide the most significant contribution, achieving the final target will require a more holistic approach, which combines efforts in a variety of areas towards enhancing the overall efficiency of marine transportation. This includes the integration of the various systems involved, combining them with new elements as applicable as well as intelligent management systems. These shall allow the continuous optimisation towards local as well as overall goals, thereby making use of the ever more detailed data available on relevant influencing factors such as condition of equipment, cargo, weather, sea condition, routing and schedule, etc. The present contribution provides an overview of WinGD’s development in this context, and highlights important steps taken. This includes an attempt to quantify the cost/benefit ratio associated with the different technologies under consideration.
